Redis vs Valkey
Why Valkey was forked from Redis, what stays compatible, and how to choose.
Transcript
In 2024, Redis moved from a permissive open source license to source-available licenses.
In response, the Linux Foundation and the community forked the last open source version as Valkey.
Valkey stays compatible: the same protocol, the same commands, and the same client libraries.
So moving between them is usually just a change of address.
Valkey is developed in the open, with backing from major cloud providers.
Choose by your license needs, your cloud's managed offering, and the features you rely on.
Same protocol. Different governance.
